A Swim Meet Worth the Attendance

With more than 550 swimmers from 27 countries coming together for one meet in Florida, the Union Americana de Natacion (UANA) Swimming Cup had one of the biggest international age group meets in the United States. This meet was held in Coral Springs, Florida, January 19th to 21st 2018.

Participating countries were Antigua & Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, the Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Turks and Caicos, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and St. Vincent.

4 out of 11 qualifying swimmers from St. Lucia attended the meet under the watchful eye of Coach Norman Banfield from the Seajays Swim Club. 3 of the 4 swimmers namely Odlum Smith, Monplaisir and Archibald are new entrants to the 15-17 age group category.

Coach Banfield expressed his delight in the swimmers who were able to improve their times, specifically Terrel Monplaisir improving in 4 from 5 races and his versatility in four different disciplines, Free, Back, Breast and IM, Jayhan Odlum Smith improving in 3 from 5 races with qualifying times for CCCAN and Devin Boodha improving in 2 from 5 races. Jamaar Archibald did put on a fight but was not as successful as his teammates. Banfield noted that with increase pool time and increase exposure to regional and international meets the swimmers will realize their goals. The four swimmers have all qualified for the Carifta Swimming competition slated in the month of April 2018 in Jamaica.
