SLASA Hosts FINA Swimming Officials’ Clinic Intermediate Level
This past weekend November 23rd to the 25th Saint Lucia Amateur Swimming Association conducted a FINA Intermediate Swimming Officials’ Clinic at the Olympic Committee House in La Clery. The clinic was intended to provide basic training for officials on an intermediate level and give them an opportunity to develop their skills and further the development of aquatics in St. Lucia.
Bill Hogan was FINA’s chosen representative who visited our shores to impact his knowledge in the sport and more so in Officiating. Bill, originating from Canada has been involved in aquatic sports for a number of years. He inspired and engaged the group of 26 participants to include Officials from Martinique, with an overview of FINA rules for the 4 competitive strokes, responsibilities of deck officials to include Referees and Inspector of Turns to name a few.
Much emphasis was placed on Competition Management, Time Keeping, Official Decision Making to include evaluating the race, the start, protest, disqualifications, Seeding Heats and Finals.
FINA Stroke videos were shared which included group discussions on situations and resolutions.
The final day of training included Pool Practice with swimmers in the water.
At the culmination of the clinic there was an examination and evaluation session which preceded with participants receiving their FINA Certification of Participation.
SLASA is extremely grateful to FINA for affording our local federation the opportunity to host this clinic and looks forward to further hosting a few Coaches Clinic in the near future.
